After a nearly-9-year journey, on this Sunday, 30 June, the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and EU – Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) will be signed in Hanoi, following the approval of the EU Council early this week. The EVFTA is promised to bring Vietnam and Europe closer – two markets that are very complementary. With European investment and Vietnam exports in goods to the EU expected to grow, positive economic effects for local enterprises and incidentally improvements on the welfare of Vietnamese citizens will follow.

Nicolas is EuroCham Chairman since March 2019, having been Co-Chair since October 2017 and a member of its Executive Committee since 2014, with particular involvement in the preparation of the White Book and advocacy on behalf of foreign investors to the Vietnamese authorities.
Member of the Paris Bar, Nicolas Audier is an attorney with 20 years of experience in the ASEAN Region and Vietnam in particular. He has been working in Vietnam since 1995 and was head of a leading international law firm in Vietnam from 1995 to 2008, before establishing Audier & Partners, which now has offices in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Ulan Bator and Yangon. He is special trade advisor on Vietnam for the French MFA since 1999, having been honored (“Bang Khen”) by the Vietnamese Minister of Justice in recognition of his substantial contribution to the development of Vietnam’s legal system, one of three lawyers to ever receive this distinction.

After studying law in France and Germany, Mr Bouflet served the European Commission for 37 years. Among others he participated to the negotiations of the WTO Agreement and also to the taskforce for the accession to the EU of Sweden, Finland and Austria. As member of the legal service of the Commission, he acted for many years as litigator of the EU in the WTO Dispute Settlement Panels. He was also Deputy Representative of the European Commission in France. Finally, he was posted as Head of Trade Affairs in the EU Delegation to Thailand and subsequently in the Delegation to Vietnam where he participated to the lead negotiators meetings of the EVFTA.
