On 30 December 2018, The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) came into effect with 6 out of 11 participants signing the historic trade agreement. With Vietnam set to sign this month, the CPTPP represents a next-generation FTA that links rich consumer markets to emerging economies in Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, its focus on IPR, limiting the role of SoEs, and the adoption of strict environmental and labour legislation will compel participating states to transform their economies in fundamentally progressive ways. Importantly, the agreement has also been conceived as an open trade agreement meaning extra-regional states may join in the future.
This talk will discuss the CPTPP in terms of its geopolitical dimensions and what it means for regional and global trade, specifically in Vietnam.
